With my husband's brother in prison, we experience all these things. The prison is 15 minutes from our home, but we have to mail a letter to to another state, where the letter will be scanned and sent to his tablet, where he will have to pay to read it. Also, the company doing the scanning has all sorts of reasons for rejecting the letter, such as if the letter is from more than one person (I included a note on the letter that my husband wrote, so the entire letter was rejected). In other words, the prisoner would have to pay to read two letters, if more than one person's greetings were sent.
