Why I Write

Finding a sense of community

Deep thoughts. (author’s photo)

I have never been one to follow the status quo. When something I read seems “off” to me, I question, research, and search inside myself until I can figure out just why I feel so unsettled.

My own thinking has been greatly influenced by the words of Noam Chomsky, Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay), and Dr. Gabor Maté.

Professor Chomsky’s insight into the manufacturing of consent, Thay’s teachings of deep compassion for ourselves and others, and Dr. Maté’s insights into the role of trauma in our societies, have provided a path for my personal evolution.

I am grateful for the vast contribution to my education that those authors provided through the written word. They helped me find words to explain my thoughts. I hope that I can do the same thing for others, providing perspectives that offer alternative ways of viewing the world.

Writing helps to corral my swirling thoughts into a cohesive idea for a story to share with others. Hopefully, a discussion will ensue that will allow me to hear others express their thoughts on the idea.

All of us have biases. We need to hear the stories of those whose lives are very different from our own.

The status quo, mainstream media would have us believe that only certain points of view are acceptable…
