When I lived in Hawaii, I learned that the language has a word for White people -- haole. https://bigislandnow.com/2016/06/10/haole-is-it-a-bad-word/

My friends who were born in Hawaii, and were not white, told me that I wasn't Haole because I had Portuguese background, and the Portuguese were brought to Hawaii to work on the plantations, as were many Asian peoples.

While Haole may be seen as a slur, many Hawaiian elders describe the word "as a way to describe ones behavior or mentality—again, not in a bad or derogatory way, but describing one’s thinking as not being in line or sensitive to cultural issues."

Because Hawaii was taken over by the United States (their Queen was imprisoned), native people do not want to be considered a part of the US.

I fully support Hawaiian sovereignty.
