Today, I think substances are abused in order to escape the pain of reality. I could understand the slaves using alcohol and opium, if it was available to them, to escape the horror of their lives. But, for the slave owners, they could have changed their reality, although they would have lost their place in society. Still, the alcohol and opium provided an escape from having to face themselves.
