As the midterm elections approach, I am trying hard not to get discouraged. Our country is falling apart, although many of those who are still living comfortable lives are not aware of just how bad things are for the rest of us.

Many of those living in comfortable “bubbles” are Baby Boomers. They came of age during an era of social changes (GI Bill, strong unions, and high taxes on the wealthy) that allowed incredible growth for the middle class (or at least the white middle class).

Because they were able to “get their piece of the pie”, many of this generation believe that hard work and discipline are all that are necessary to be successful in this country. They did it, why can’t you?

These Boomers are senior citizens, and senior citizens come out in force to vote. Too often, they are happy to re-elect the old guard, people just like them. They don’t want to vote for a third-party candidate or a progressive.

Fed on a steady diet of corporate propaganda, they blame the lazy young people, the immigrants, black people, and the poor for the current sad state of our country.
