Roman Catholicism still considers divorce a sin, and remarriage unacceptable in the eyes of the church. My Dad referred to me as a Jezebel, because my ex-husband and I never had children. Of course, very few people actually follow these rules; they either leave the church or they lie. It's ridiculous. I think that when society starts to unravel due to inequality and poverty, people cling to religion as a form of stability. All the 'other-isms" rear their ugly heads and people unite with their "own kind" (it's gruesome to even write those word). I believe things got better (for some) for a few decades following WWII, as economies stabilized and people didn't feel so threatened. I would like to think that we could overcoming the religious fanatics by uniting under the banner of working people, and recognizing what we share In common.
