My grandparents escaped from the Dictator Salazar and his secret police who were known for torure. He died in 1968, but the regime lasted until 1974. Many people did abandon their homes out of sheer fright. Also, the earthquake in 1969 destroyed much of Lisbon, and was felt all the way to Bordeaux, France.
