Maybe You Can’t Fix Stupid
But you can sure as Hell keep chipping away at ignorance
A few years back, during a blizzard, heavy snows and gale force winds took down the electrical wires near my house. I heard a loud POP, and watched as a live wire danced wildly in the wind, spitting out sparks.
I immediately called the fire department, as the wire spun out of control in all directions, and kept touching down to the level of the snow-covered sidewalks.
Sitting and looking out my window, I saw a family out walking. School was out, work was largely cancelled, and families were out walking and playing in the snow. This is the Northeastern United States, and people do go exploring during blizzard conditions. It’s a thing.
I ran to my front door and yelled to the family, “Look out for that wire, it’s live and keeps sparking.” They looked up, but didn't move. Instead, they pointed and shouted, and drew the attention of other walkers, who joined them in watching the sparking wire dance in the wind.
They remained in reach of the wire. Somehow, they found it entertaining to duck and dodge, laughing as they made last minute dives for safety.
As Ron White used to say, “You can’t fix stupid.”
We are all born ignorant, but one must…
