Johnny, the unfortunate truth is some white people do use this term when there are no nonwhites in the room. When I bring up systemic racism with these folks, they are so fucking fragile that they have to defend their behavior to other white people who don't agree with them. It is though they are trying to convince me that THEY have suffered too (i.e. ALL lives matter), so that I am incorrect when I insist that Black Lives Matter and that black people have legitimate reasons for their protest. It is a way of shutting up whites who disagree with them and seeking compassion for their fragile white egos. The people who say this in the company of all whites are too afraid to try saying the same thing to a person of color. God forbid, that would be like acknowledging they are racist!
