I’m just not as profitable as a corporation

I recently wrote an article in response to the prompt: Is it still a man’s world?

But that only tells part of the story of why an educated, in-demand, conscientious worker had her pay decreased, and thus stress-quit a job that she loved.

If you haven’t read my other article, here’s some background: I spent 10 years teaching exercise classes at a senior citizens’ center. My classes were very popular, and had waiting lists. I spent over $500 every 2 years, without reimbursement, to keep my certifications current and to expand my knowledge in working with the senior population.

In those 10 years, I never received a raise. I had to lobby on my own for funds for exercise balls, and other equipment. But, it was worth it. I loved the people I taught, and seeing their mobility improve as a result of my classes was rewarding.

But, I am low-income and I desperately needed a raise. The male exercise instructor got a huge raise, I got a pay…
