I worked in a high end restaurant that was hiring wait staff. I was the first to meet the applicants and take their resumes, which I then turned in to the owner, who did the hiring. The owner was once standing beside me when a black applicant came in, and she was very sweet to him, and she took his application from him. As soon as he let, the owner turned to me and said, "You know what to do with this, it goes straight into the circular file" (she crumbled the application and put it in the wastebasket and then added, "don't waste my time." I started looking for a new job right then. Her message was clear and horrifying to me.
