I, too, am a walker and (being my curious self) I have taken to notice the reactions of people coming towards me on the sidewalk. White people rarely pay attention to who is approaching them. Black people always walk with awareness of their surroundings. When I see anyone approaching me, I greet them (with words or a nod). Black people always respond in kind, whereas many white people ignore me, while they stare ahead, or continue their conversations through their bluetooth ear pods. I, like you, practice meditation, yet I, too, get miffed when people can't even bother to acknowledge another human being with a simple nod. I get that "they think they're better than me" feeling inside. I then remind myself that they are miserable folks, and that I really have no desire to be considered a part of their clique. For you, adding the history of racism, these feelings must really roil your insides, and take some time to subside. Just keep practicing your inner peace, but continue telling your story. People need to be reminded that racism is systemic, and not some relic of the past.
