I lived in a small city (about 70,000 people), and had a childhood much like yours. That type of "free play" helps kids know how to take reasonable risks and not be afraid of everything. We also built strong bones due to all the walking, jumping, skipping, etc. Parents today get criticized if they allow their kids to be unsupervised. It is sad.
