Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

No one wants to feel “lesser than” anyone else. Yet, we all judge, compare, and label ourselves and others.

Smarter than. Richer than. More educated than. Prettier than. A quest to be top dog in at least one category, if not more than one.

Well, considering the world’s current population is 8 billion people, how would anyone really know who Number One is in any particular category? The Guinness Book of Records? What about the people who don’t choose to be recognized for “holding the record?”

Really, the quest to see oneself as “superlative” is rather amusing.

When I teach group exercise classes, I ask my students to please try to not compare themselves with other class members. Human beings have differing limb lengths, muscle types, health issues, balance issues, and cognitive abilities.

The goal of an exercise program needs to be doing our best with our own body, and not getting hung up on who’s more flexible, more coordinated, or has more endurance. We look for progress in ourselves, not comparison to others.

The same goes for intelligence and education levels. The person with a PhD. is not necessarily more intelligent than the person with a GED, although he has had more formal…
