Can You Handle the Truth?
Sifting through propaganda is a life-long process
“You can’t handle the truth,” shouts Col. Jessup in the movie A Few Good Men. Col. Jessop’s speech serves to justify the horrible things that the military has to do to protect the freedom of the public.
In real life, that whole speech is military propaganda for the American public (and beyond the US). A speech meant to shut down the concerns of any person who dares to question a military action.
It’s a way of telling the public that they should sit down and shut up, and blindly trust in their government.
I don’t hate the military. I understand that force is sometimes necessary to ward off the bullies. But I am opposed to endless wars that profit the wealthy and reduce the the lives of young recruits to be nothing more than dispensable pawns in the war machine.
Yet, I do agree that most people can’t yet handle the truth. Not only about war, but about anything. Because it’s scary to see through the lies, and come to the realization that almost nothing you have learned about your society, or the entire world, is true.
It’s hard to admit, “I’ve been duped.”
Admit it! You are not alone; we’ve all been duped. And, as frightening as it is to face that reality, the stronger…
