Beautifully written! Yes, I have seen that dark side of Los Angeles, and the dark side of many other American cities. I was born and raised in the US, but I have never felt desensitized to the poverty and addiction that come from the despair of living with inequality and injustice. It's wonderful that you can appreciate the totality of the US.
